My President, My Night, My Way : Wanted to go takes photos of some of the election polls. Rock the Vote was looking for volunteers but as it got later, I was coming down with a nasty headcold, so I took some meds and waited for them to kick in. Didn't really help and I was feeling bummed that on this historical night and this historical election, I, that document every freakin' possible thing under the sun with my digital camara, was not going to take not one photo of the magic in action. So I sat there watching the election results on all the stations, like I normally do when something big is happening, channel surfing, with camara in hand, I started shooting my TV. Yup, and you can tell the drugs had indeed kicked in, since it was all I could do to hold the camara steady and every time I hit the shutter, the camara tilted. I thought I would fix them or delete the blurry ones but then thought, I want to remember everything about this night and what I was doing during this historic night. Anyway I guess I got to somewhat shoot/document history, My President, My night, My Way. - Thanks for checking them out.

Safe Space Images : When I'm asked to talk about my art work, my normal reply is, "It just ain't that deep." But then I was asked to do this project and yes, it was that deep. I was asked to be part of a group of women artists who would mentor, guide some of the women of Safe Space in an art project creating tee-shirts. I couldn't understand how I would be able to do that since I'm a photographer and I don't really draw or paint. My work includes taking photos and then digitally enhancing them to create a piece of art. So I thought I could shoot photos documenting the event but I was reminded that the women and children at Safe Space were there to be sheltered from their abuser. No one could know who they were or where they were. Basically they are in hiding and we can't show their faces. So I created photo transfers for them to work with along with the paints & jewlery. I then thought I needed to show how hard this is for these women, they are in a jail of sorts. And even though they have been through so much, they now must deal with living behind "these" bars. I think it's important to show everyone and bring awareness about this project and how it helps, if just for a brief moment, these brave women, and help raise funds to continue this much needed shelter. I didn't realize that even days later, I would still be so moved by this project. In speaking with the other artists, they too were moved by this experience. How sad I thought, they can't even pose next to their work of art, so in their honor, I photographed their hands at work. Back to home page - www.SusanAlvarez.net
